Queensland
Subtropical river city above the bay
Brisbane grew as a river port and Queensland capital wrapped around bends of the Brisbane River. South Bank's parkland and cultural strip face the CBD across the water after Expo-era reinvention. The cruise terminal at Hamilton / Portside sits several kilometres downstream/upstream of that core — guests transfer by CityCat, taxi or bus. Brisbane grew as a river port serving Queensland's hinterland.
Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point cliffs give the classic skyline angles. Queen Street Mall and the CBD grid handle shopping and shade. The CityCat itself doubles as sightseeing if you treat the river ride as part of the day rather than dead transfer time. bridges, ferries and a CBD that faces the water rather than a classic ocean harbour. which is why the CityCat ride is both transfer and sightseeing.
Moreton Bay islands and beaches are separate bay logic. On a ship day, river-core South Bank and CBD fit. Adding a bay island after a late CityCat arrival is how people meet security in a hurry. Stay river-focused unless hours are long. That geography still decides what a cruise day can honestly cover. Modern cruise terminals at Hamilton put passengers on a working river reach, not beside Queen Street Mall.
Budget the CityCat. South Bank and the riverboard beat a rushed bay hop.

- 01
South Bank and the riverboard
Parkland, lagoon swimming and cultural buildings across from the CBD. The usual win once you clear the terminal transfer. Flat walking, shade trees, food. Give it time before inventing Kangaroo Point plus a museum plus a mall sprint.
- 02
CBD and Queen Street Mall
Downtown grid for shopping and air-conditioning. Linked by bridge or ferry to South Bank. Useful heat escape. Keep an eye on CityCat times back toward Hamilton. Shopping streets and river towers a short walk from South Bank.
- 03
Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point cliffs
Skyline views from the cliffs or bridge area. Good photos, some steps. Pair with South Bank rather than as a third major district after a late start from the terminal. Viewpoint and riverside path with bridge drama.
- 04
CityCat as sightseeing
River ferries are transport and a cheap scenic ride. Sit outside if weather behaves. Factor boarding and riding time into all-aboard maths — the pretty ride still counts. Ride the river ferry as part of the day, not only as a chore.
- 05
One museum on the cultural strip
Queensland museums and galleries near South Bank. Pick one. Museum-plus-every-viewpoint is how the return CityCat gets missed. Queensland museums and galleries cluster near South Bank. Choose one indoor hour when heat peaks; do not collect every building after a late transfer.
- 06
Moreton Bay only on a long call
Bay islands and beaches need more transfer than the river core. Fine when the ship is in late and returns are locked. Skip on ordinary calls after a slow start from Hamilton. Island ferries and bay beaches need hours the river city day rarely has spare.
- 07
Stay river-core if transfer ran late
When Portside logistics ate the morning, South Bank alone is a good day. Do not punish yourself with a bay dash. Cut the optional stop, not the way back. South Bank plus CBD lunch beats a stressed Kangaroo Point and island fantasy when the clock is already thin.

- You are at Portside / Hamilton, not beside South Bank. Budget CityCat, taxi or bus both ways from the first minute. Portside / Brisbane Cruise Terminal is at Hamilton.
- CityCat is reliable when you read the timetable. Peak queues still happen when multiple ships move guests. Build that into the plan before you leave the gangway.
- River-core beats Moreton Bay on ordinary calls. Hold all-aboard margin for the upstream return to the terminal. Subtropical heat and sudden showers are common.
