Baja California Sur
Where Pacific and Sea of Cortez meet
Cabo San Lucas sits where the Pacific meets the Gulf of California at the tip of the Baja peninsula. The granite arch at Land’s End is the natural landmark that drew seafarers and later tourism, which is why almost every day call aims a boat at El Arco. The rock and the meeting of two seas still define the place more than any shopping street on the marina.
The modern town and marina grew for sport fishing, resorts and cruise calls. San José del Cabo further up the corridor is a separate town with its own pace. Treat it as another destination, not a casual add-on when tenders are already eating your morning. Médano Beach and the marina strip are the practical core for most cruise guests who come ashore on a ship day.
There is no large-ship cruise pier here. Anchoring and tendering is normal, and afternoon winds are a known risk for independent plans that run late. Return to the marina with a wide buffer once swell builds. A calm marina lunch beats a missed tender more often than people admit on the outbound ride from the ship. That pattern still shapes what a cruise day can honestly hold.
Treat the tender as the first excursion. El Arco is the second.

What to do with the time you have
- 01
Boat to El Arco and Land’s End
Take a glass-bottom or standard panga from the marina. This is the defining view of the call — do it early if swell is forecast to rise. Confirm how long the ride lasts and where you rejoin the tender queue afterwards.
- 02
Swim at Médano
The main swim-and-walk beach is a short hop from the marina. It is enough for a short tender window. Water-sports traffic is busy near the resorts, so keep valuables watched and leave time for the walk or ride back to the pier.
- 03
Marina promenade
Shops, shade and lunch without further transport. This is the fallback when tenders run late or seas chop — still a useful half-day. Stay nearby if the afternoon wind is already building and you do not want another water taxi.
- 04
Skip San José on a tight tender day
San José del Cabo needs a road transfer. Keep it for a longer call or a land stay when tender risk is not already taxing the clock. Adding it after El Arco usually means a rushed return through marina crowds.
- 05
Desert or arch photo loop by land
A short land circuit can frame the arch and desert edge when you prefer not to boat. Agree the return time in writing with your driver. Do not turn it into a corridor tour that ends at San José unless hours and seas are clearly generous.
- 06
Stay marina-local if tenders are slow
When morning tenders queue, drop the ambitious list and use the marina strip for lunch, shade and a short beach hop. Missing El Arco is disappointing; missing the ship is worse. Rebuild the day around what the tender schedule still allows.
- 07
Watch tender ticket rules
Follow the ship’s tender ticket and last-boat instructions exactly. Independent water taxis do not replace your ship tender. Keep your seaday documents dry and your group together at the marina pier when recall begins.

What's worth doing
El Arco
Granite arch at Land’s End — usually reached by boat from the marina.
Médano Beach
Main swim beach near the marina resorts.
Cabo San Lucas Marina
Tender landing, shops, shade and lunch without further transport.
Lover’s Beach
Sand near the arch — boat access and sea conditions decide the day.
Before you sail
Tender tickets and swell
- Build tender queues into both outbound and return legs. Afternoon wind on the bay is a known risk — leave a wider buffer than you would at a pier berth.
- El Arco boats and Médano Beach sit close to the marina; San José del Cabo does not. Keep corridor trips for longer calls when tender delay is not already chewing the morning.
- Carry sun protection and cards or cash that work at marina kiosks. Follow the ship’s last-tender rules without improvising a private boat back to the ship.
