Disko Bay
Iceberg town beside a World Heritage fjord
Ilulissat — Greenlandic for icebergs — is a working town on Disko Bay. Sermeq Kujalleq, also known as Jakobshavn Isbræ, feeds the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004 and one of the most productive glacier outlets of the Greenland ice sheet. The ice that calves here drifts into the bay and becomes the town’s defining view. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
People have lived and hunted along this coast for millennia; the modern settlement mixes fishing, tourism and research with brightly painted houses on rocky slopes. Zion’s Church and the harbour edge give a human scale against the ice. Cruise guests arrive by tender because there is no deep pier — that alone makes timing and weather part of the day’s design.
The smart call is the Icefjord boardwalk for grounded viewpoints, then an iceberg boat if conditions allow and tender recall is clear. Eqi glacier and long flightseeing hops need more hours than many calls give. Guests who stack every ice product usually spend the afternoon watching fog and queues instead of ice. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Boardwalk first. Boat among icebergs only when weather and tenders cooperate.

Ashore
Boardwalk, boat or town edge
- 01
Walk the Ilulissat Icefjord boardwalk
The marked path to Icefjord viewpoints is the independent priority once you clear the harbour. Dress for wind and cold underfoot. Stay on the boardwalk and paths — the ice edge is not a casual scramble, and fog can erase landmarks quickly.
- 02
Take an iceberg boat on Disko Bay
A small-boat tour among the bergs is the other headline when sea state and ice allow. Book early and treat it as the day’s main outing, not a late add-on after a long hike. Cancelled boats are common — have the boardwalk as your solid plan B.
- 03
Harbour and town boardwalks
Walk the harbour edge and town slopes for painted houses, fishing working life and ice already visible from shore. Useful when tenders run late or boat slots are full. Keep loops short so you can still reach the Icefjord path.
- 04
Do not stack Eqi on a short tender day
Eqi glacier trips are a separate commitment with long boat hours. Skip them on a standard Ilulissat call unless the published shore time is unusually long and the operator guarantees a return that beats tender recall.
- 05
Photograph ice from the town shore
Some of the best berg views sit near town without a long hike. Go early for clearer air when possible. Do not climb unstable ice or shoreline rocks for a closer shot — distance and patience are safer than heroics.
- 06
Visit a local museum if open
A short museum stop adds culture and warmth when weather turns or when you want context before the boardwalk. Check opening hours against tender timing. One indoor hour is enough beside ice viewing. Keep an eye on all-aboard and do not invent a second outing once you are behind.
- 07
Keep shopping brief and layers on
Souvenir time shrinks fast in cold wind. Buy what you will carry, keep waterproof layers on between shops, and treat the pier recall as non-negotiable. Warm hands matter more than another fridge magnet.

What's worth doing
Ilulissat Icefjord (Kangia)
UNESCO ice edge and boardwalk viewpoints — the core visit.
Disko Bay icebergs
Bergs from shore or by boat when conditions allow.
Ilulissat harbour
Tender landing and working waterfront at the town’s feet.
Zion’s Church and town slopes
Painted houses and church landmark above the harbour.
Before you sail
Tenders, ice and cold-weather buffers
- There is no deep-water cruise pier. Tender delays through ice and swell can cut shore time without warning, so keep the Icefjord boardwalk as a plan that still works if boats cancel.
- Dress in warm, windproof layers even in summer. Paths can be slick, and waiting at the landing is colder than walking. Waterproof footwear beats fashion shoes on wet pontoons.
- Choose boardwalk, boat or a short town loop — not Eqi plus flightseeing plus every shop. All-aboard and tender recall do not move because the light looked perfect five minutes later.
