Northern Taiwan
Rainy port that became Taipei’s sea gate
Keelung’s deep harbour made it northern Taiwan’s main commercial port under Qing, Japanese colonial and modern administrations. Hills and fortifications still ring the basin. That history still shapes what a cruise day can honestly hold. Guests who plan around that grain usually meet all-aboard without a scramble. Time ashore goes faster than the map suggests.
Miaokou Night Market grew beside the temple streets near the station — food culture as much as sightseeing. Heping Island and coastal parks sit just beyond the harbour mouth. Cruise itineraries often label the call ‘Taipei’. Geographically you land in Keelung; the capital is a deliberate transfer, not a gangway stroll. Miaokou and harbour first. Taipei only when you budget the train both ways.

Ashore
Harbour town, or one Taipei district
- 01
Miaokou and the harbour walk
Night-market streets and waterfront plaza work even in daylight for snacks and a compact Keelung circuit. Closest honest use of a short call. Leave a clear margin for the walk or transfer back to the ship.
- 02
Heping Island or coastal park
Rock formations and sea air just outside the commercial core. Good when you want Taiwan without the Taipei transfer clock. Heping Island rock formations give sea air without the Taipei transfer clock.
- 03
Taipei Main Station area or Taipei 101
Train in, pick one district, train back with margin. Ximending, the station underground or the 101 area — not a museum-plus-mall-plus-tea-house stack. Train in, pick one Taipei district, train back with margin — not a museum-plus-mall stack.
- 04
Jiufen only instead of Taipei
Mountain old street east of Keelung is a separate road outing. Choose Jiufen or Taipei, not both on a standard ship day. Jiufen old street is a road outing east of Keelung; choose Jiufen or Taipei, not both.
- 05
Eat through Miaokou with a time cap
Snack culture is the point of a Keelung-local day. Set a spending and walking limit so harbour photos still happen. Crowds thicken later — earlier grazing is calmer. Leave a clear margin for the walk or transfer back to the ship.
- 06
Visit a short coastal park if skipping Taipei
Sea cliffs and parks near the harbour mouth reset the mood after market lanes. Keep the loop tight in rain. This is the Taiwan-without-transfer plan done properly. Leave a clear margin for the walk or transfer back to the ship.
- 07
Pick Taipei 101 area or Ximending — not both plus a tea house marathon
One district with walking room beats a checklist that ignores Keelung’s distance. Start the return train earlier than pride suggests. Station underground mazes also take minutes you did not budget. Leave a clear margin for the walk or transfer back to the ship.

Jiufen old street

Before you sail
Train honesty, return buffer
- Keelung Station is about a ten-minute harbour walk from typical cruise berths. Trains to Taipei run often; buy at machines or counters — no reservation needed for ordinary TRA services.
- Door-to-door Keelung-to-central-Taipei is commonly 45–60 minutes each way once you include the walk. Leave more if you use the highway. Highway coaches can work but still need the same all-aboard timing as trains — lost transfers are the risk.
- Aim to be on a return train well before all-aboard. One Taipei focus beats a multi-stop fantasy that ignores the transfer. Aim to be on a return service well before all-aboard; one Taipei focus beats a multi-stop fantasy.
