One Corfu chapter — town, palace or west coves

Kerkyra is the Greek name for Corfu. Ships use the new port west of Kerkyra Town. UNESCO lanes are the default, but Achilleion, Mouse Island (Pontikonisi), Paleokastritsa and the north coast are separate road days. Choose one island chapter. Trying to do the Liston, the palace and the west coves before all-aboard usually means a rushed, tiring afternoon.

Ionian island

Kerkyra — island name, layered rule

Kerkyra is the island and the town’s Greek name; Corfu is the international form. Homeric and classical references sit under later Byzantine, Venetian, French and British rule that shaped fortresses, the Liston arcade and the Spianada. The old town’s lanes and ramparts are why most cruise guests stay near the harbour. Treat Venetian Kerkyra Town as a full day in its own right, not a five-minute photo stop before a coach.

Beyond the Venetian old town, the nineteenth-century Achilleion palace and the Kanoni peninsula viewpoints show a different Kerkyra — royal retreat and postcard monastery islet rather than fortress lanes alone. Paleokastritsa on the west coast adds swimming coves and a cliff monastery. Each of those needs road time the old-town walk does not. Mixing them mid-afternoon is how people join a late shuttle queue.

Cruise logistics still start at the new port. The honest day is either a deep Kerkyra Town walk with the Liston and fortresses, or a southern loop of Achilleion and Kanoni, or a west-coast Paleokastritsa plan — one chapter, not three. Guests who try to collect every Corfu postcard usually remember only the taxi dashboard and a scramble for the ship.

Forts and Liston, or Achilleion and Kanoni, or the west coves. One Kerkyra chapter per call.

Sensible ways to spend the day

  1. 01

    Tour Achilleion Palace

Elisabeth of Austria’s hillside villa has Achilles statues, gardens and bay views. Treat it as a focused half-day south of town — not an add-on after both fortresses. Book or join a coach with a clear return. Pairing it with Kanoni can work on a long morning; adding Paleokastritsa afterward usually does not.

  2. 02

    Kanoni and Mouse Island viewpoint

The classic prospect looks over Vlacherna monastery and Pontikonisi (Mouse Island). It is a short hop from town and pairs with Achilleion better than with Paleokastritsa. Allow time for photos and the walk to the viewpoint. This is a southern-loop stop, not a whole-island tour.

  3. 03

    Paleokastritsa coves and monastery

West-coast swimming and a cliff monastery when you want sea over Venetian streets. Road time both ways means this must be the day’s main plan. Bring water shoes for pebbles if you swim. Leave earlier than the swim tempts you to stay — west roads clog when several ships send coaches.

  4. 04

North-coast beach only on a long call

Sidari or similar bays work only if hours are long and town is not on the agenda. Kerkyra is not a beach-plus-fortress sandwich on a short ship day. Choose either a beach strip or Kerkyra Town depth. Trying both usually means a late rush for the new-port shuttle.

  5. 05

Achilleion with Kanoni on a long morning

Palace plus viewpoint can share a southern loop when coaches or taxis are efficient. Still skip Paleokastritsa afterward. Two south-side stops beat a cross-island sandwich. Protect the return to the new port and keep lunch simple so you are not still ordering when the clock turns.

  6. 06

Swim at Paleokastritsa as the coast plan

Clear water and cliff monastery paths are the west-day reward. Confirm sea state and return timing before you commit. Treat this as the whole coast plan, not something you add after a fortress morning. Inland traffic on the way back is the usual risk.

  7. 07

New Fortress ramparts if island roads are off

A town-edge fort walk can salvage a day when you abandon Paleokastritsa for weather or timing. Keep it shorter than a full old-town deep dive if that is another plan. Meet back at the new port with margin — fortress photos are not worth missing the ship.

Before you sail

New port, heat and one chapter

  • New port to old town is short; Achilleion and Paleokastritsa are not. Decide your chapter before clearing the terminal. Heat makes the port-to-town walk harder in summer — a shuttle or taxi is normal, not luxury.
  • For Venetian core detail — Liston, Spianada, Old Fortress — keep the day in Kerkyra Town rather than mixing aims mid-afternoon. Wider-island forks need their own morning start and a locked return.
  • West-coast returns stack late when several ships are in. Leave Paleokastritsa earlier than the swim tempts you to stay, and treat north-coast beaches as a long-call alternative, not an add-on.
