Portugal
Capital rebuilt after earthquake, still climbing its hills
Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake into a Baixa grid of squares and riverfront grandeur, while Alfama kept older lanes climbing toward the castle. Cruise ships that berth at Jardim do Tabaco or Santa Apolónia put guests beside that story on foot. The Tagus light and tram lines are part of daily life. Guests who pace the hills enjoy the day; those who sprint every viewpoint do not.
Belém holds the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and Age of Discoveries monuments further west along the river. It is a separate transfer by tram, train or taxi, not a casual extension of an Alfama morning. Tram 28 through the old hills is famous and often packed. One miradouro done slowly beats three rushed photo stops. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Cruise days work as Alfama and Baixa depth, or a Belém monuments plan, with at most one viewpoint coda. They fray when guests stack Jerónimos, the castle, tram 28 and LX Factory. Confirm your Tagus berth first. Lisbon rewards one spine told well. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing. Time ashore goes faster than the map suggests.
Alfama or Belém. The river connects them; the timetable does not forgive both.

Ashore
Hills, Baixa or Belém
- 01
Alfama and the castle slopes
Climb Alfama’s lanes toward the cathedral ridge and castle slopes. Wear decent shoes and carry water. Pair with one miradouro rather than racing to Belém afterward. This is the classic walk-off Lisbon morning from central berths.
- 02
Baixa and the riverfront squares
Walk Baixa’s grid to Praça do Comércio and the riverfront for open light and cafés. Easier underfoot than Alfama. Useful when knees argue against steep lanes. Keep shopping focused if Belém is still on a long-call plan.
- 03
Belém monuments
Jerónimos and Belém Tower need tram, train or taxi time and ticket planning. Treat Belém as the whole west day. Do not add Alfama climbs afterward. One monastery visit done properly beats two façades from a moving taxi.
- 04
Pick one spine
Write either hills-and-Baixa or Belém on your plan and stop. Soft stacking is how Lisbon days end in a late tram. Guests who try everything remember the heat more than the tiles. One spine is the whole strategy.
- 05
Ride tram 28 only with crowd realism
Tram 28 is atmospheric and often impossibly crowded. Use it for a short hop if you board early, or skip it for walking and taxis. Do not build the day around a perfect full route. A packed tram is not a rest.
- 06
Choose one miradouro and stay for the light
Pick one viewpoint, sit with the view, then move on. Viewpoint hopping across the hills eats knees and buffer. Pair with Alfama rather than Belém. The light is better when you are not rushing. Keep an eye on all-aboard and do not invent a second outing once you are behind.
- 07
LX Factory only on long calls with easy returns
The converted industrial complex suits a long call when returns are easy. It is a poor late add-on after Belém and Alfama. Keep it as an either/or creative stop. Shopping bags slow the river return more than people expect.
On the map
What's worth doing
Alfama
Hill lanes and castle slopes — walk-off classic.
Praça do Comércio
Riverfront square on the Baixa grid.
Jerónimos Monastery
Belém centrepiece — west transfer required.
Belém Tower
River tower paired with Jerónimos on a Belém day.
Before you sail
Berth check, hills and one spine
- Confirm Jardim do Tabaco, Santa Apolónia or another Tagus berth before you assume a short walk into Alfama. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Alfama-and-Baixa or Belém — choose one main spine. Hills, trams and ticket queues punish stacking both. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Wear shoes for cobbles, carry water and keep sixty to ninety minutes for the return when several ships share the river. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
