Bay Islands
Purpose-built pier on a Bay Island
Mahogany Bay was built as a private cruise pier on Roatán’s coast — a controlled beach club, shopping strip and activity zone designed for ship days rather than a traditional town landing. Guests step into a product landscape at the gangway. Coxen Hole and West End sit outside that fence as separate island chapters. Knowing the difference saves the day.
Inside the complex, beaches, rentals, a zip-line and a tourist train fill easy hours without negotiation. Beyond the gate, West End and West Bay offer the island’s better swimming and bar strip, with reef outings for booked snorkellers and divers. Transfers and returns must clear pier security with margin. Soft timing outside the fence is how people join a late gate queue.
Cruise days work when guests either enjoy the pier product fully or commit to one off-pier beach or reef plan. They fray when guests sample the zip-line, dash to West Bay and chase a cultural stop before sailing. The pier is enough for many families. Roatán beyond the gate is a separate booking with its own clock. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
The pier is the product. Roatán beyond the gate is a separate booking.

Pier complex or one off-pier plan
- 01
Stay in the Mahogany Bay complex
Use the beach, shops and shade inside the fence if you want a low-logistics day. Chair rentals and pier lunch keep it simple. This is a valid Roatán call. Pair with one pier activity rather than inventing a late West End dash.
- 02
Zip-line and train if that is your morning
The on-pier zip-line and tourist train are the complex’s signature activities. Do them early if queues look long. Treat them as the fun centrepiece when you stay inside. Adding a full West Bay afternoon afterward needs a long call and early gate return.
- 03
Taxi or tour to West End / West Bay
Leave the gate for West End’s strip or West Bay’s swimming if that is your chosen island chapter. Agree the taxi return before you settle on the sand. Make off-pier beach the whole plan. Soft souvenir stops on the way back are how gate queues catch people out.
- 04
Reef or cultural excursion with a booked operator
Book snorkel, dive or cultural tours through the ship or a trusted operator with locked recall. Do not freelance reef boats at the last minute. Make the excursion the centrepiece. Pier shopping can wait for the buffer hour afterward.
- 05
Stay for a pier lunch without guilt
Eating inside the complex is practical and timed. It is not a failed island day. Keep an eye on activity queues if you still want the zip-line. A calm pier lunch ages better than a stressful unfinished West Bay sprint.
- 06
Snorkel only in advised pier zones if staying in
If you remain in the complex, use only advised swim and snorkel areas. Watch boat traffic and keep valuables dry. Short water time near the pier is enough for many guests. Do not drift toward unauthorised edges for a better photo.
- 07
Skip collecting every Roatán viewpoint
Zip-line, West Bay, a reef and a cultural village will not fit calmly. Choose pier product or one off-pier chapter. Roatán will still be here next time. The gate and the ship will not wait for a fourth stop.

Before you sail
Gate, pier product and one outside plan
- The complex is walkable from the berth. Anything beyond the gate needs taxi or excursion time and a return through pier security with margin. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Choose pier beach-and-activities or one off-pier beach or reef plan. Sampling both plus shopping is how gate queues win. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Book outside operators with clear recall. Soft freelance timing on Roatán roads is a poor match for ship clocks. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
