Fish town at the gate of Nordfjord
Måløy grew as a fishing and maritime service town on Vågsøy where Nordfjord meets exposed Atlantic weather around the Stad peninsula. Fish quays, channel traffic and a practical harbour centre still define the call. Guests land in a working coastal town rather than a postcard fjord village alone. Wind and sea state shape every plan. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Kannesteinen, the sculpted sea stack west of town, is the classic short outing when roads and wind allow. Stad peninsula viewpoints offer rawer coastal drama on organised trips. Bridge and channel views from town give immediate photographs without a long transfer. Long Nordfjord sightseeing loops compete poorly with a short ship clock. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Cruise days work as harbour front depth plus Kannesteinen, or a Stad excursion when scheduled, with town as the fallback in rough weather. They fail when guests invent long fjord drives after a late stack linger. Dress for wind. The harbour is honest work; the stack is the postcard if you leave town. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.

Harbour, sea stack or Stad coast
- 01
Harbour front and town centre
Walk the fish quays and compact centre for working maritime character. This is the reliable plan when wind cancels outer viewpoints. Pair with channel photos from town. A calm harbour hour is a valid Måløy call.
- 02
Kannesteinen sea stack
Taxi or excursion to the sea stack for the sculpted rock postcard. Wear layers and watch footing near the shore. Treat the stack as the nature centrepiece. Adding a long Nordfjord loop afterward usually costs the buffer.
- 03
Stad peninsula viewpoints
Organised viewpoints on the exposed Stad coast deliver raw Atlantic drama when scheduled. Make this the day’s big outing if you go. Respect wind warnings. Soft freelancing on exposed ground is unwise.
- 04
Stay near the quay on a rough day
When wind and rain own the morning, stay with harbour streets, cafés and indoor warmth. Better than forcing Kannesteinen in a gale. Reset plans without guilt. Rough Stad weather is part of why this coast feels serious.
- 05
Photograph the channel traffic from town
Bridge and channel views from town show working traffic without a long transfer. Keep it as a short photo circuit. Useful coda after the stack or as the whole plan in poor weather. One careful viewpoint beats every lay-by on a windy road.
- 06
Short coastal walk west only if wind allows
A short west coastal path can add shoreline texture when conditions are kind. Turn back early if gusts rise. Wear proper shoes. Path pride is a poor reason to miss the ship on an exposed day. Keep an eye on all-aboard and do not invent a second outing once you are behind.
- 07
Skip long Nordfjord sightseeing loops
Deep fjord sightseeing will not fit beside Kannesteinen and harbour time on a standard call. Stay with Måløy’s harbour-and-stack story or one Stad excursion. The wider Nordfjord map belongs to a longer itinerary.

Before you sail
Wind, harbour walks and one outer stop
- Harbour centre is walkable from the berth. Use taxis or organised trips for Kannesteinen and Stad viewpoints. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Dress for Atlantic wind even in the mild season. Outer coastal stops can close or become unpleasant quickly. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Harbour plus one stack or Stad outing fills the call. Long Nordfjord loops are how short weather windows are wasted. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
