Romsdal roads
Engineered climbs above the fjord towns
Molde faces the Romsdal Alps across the fjord; the modern drama for many visitors is the engineered mountain roads inland, especially Trollstigen. The soft waterfront reputation as the town of roses sits beside climbs into some of Norway’s most theatrical hairpins. Guests chasing the road should not leave thinking a rose bed was the plot. The road, waterfalls and valley views are the commitment.
Hairpins, bridges and valley floors were built for through traffic and tourism as much as for local farms. Seasonal opening, rockfall and weather decide whether the pass is honest on your call day. Pre-booked coaches with ship-aware returns beat improvised hire cars on tight clocks. Treat the mountain day as a timetable exercise first. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
When snow, rockfall or season closes the pass, the honest pivot is Molde harbour and Varden, not inventing an unsafe mountain improvisation to satisfy a brochure photo. Cruise days aimed at those roads succeed with early departure and a locked recall. They fail when guests add café lingering and then expect the hairpins to wait. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Road timetable first. Varden coffee is the backup.

Trollstigen out-and-back — town as fallback
- 01
Trollstigen out-and-back
The hairpin climb and viewing platforms are the whole plan. Go early with a booked coach or driver and a sworn return. Linger at the top only within the timetable. This is not a coda after a slow rose-walk morning.
- 02
Valley viewpoints along the route
Waterfall and valley pull-outs add drama on the way. Photograph one or two, then keep moving. Collecting every lay-by is how returns slip. Agree with your driver which stops are in the plan before you leave Molde.
- 03
Harbour or Varden coda on return
If the road day finishes with margin, a short harbour stroll or Varden viewpoint can close the call calmly. Only as leftover time, not as a second major outing. Town is the soft landing after hairpins.
- 04
No road booking: stay in town
If you lack a coach or the pass is closed, switch to the molde town plan — roses, cathedral and Varden. Do not improvise mountain roads late. Brochure photos are not worth an unsafe or late return. Keep an eye on all-aboard and do not invent a second outing once you are behind.
- 05
Staircase and platform time at the top
Budget real minutes for steps and viewpoints at Trollstigen, not only a windscreen photo. Wear grip shoes and a wind layer. Exit when your driver says, not when you have every angle. Platforms eat time faster than the map shows.
- 06
Photograph one waterfall pull-out only
Pick one strong waterfall stop rather than three. Each pull-out costs minutes both ways. Depth at one cascade beats a blur of spray from the coach window. Then protect the descent timetable. Keep an eye on all-aboard and do not invent a second outing once you are behind.
- 07
Varden only as a clear-weather coda
After a successful road return, Varden can add fjord panorama if hours and knees allow. Skip it if the mountain day already used the buffer. Clear weather coda only — not a stack when you are already late.
On the map
What's worth doing
Trollstigen
Hairpin road and platforms — the day’s commitment.
Valley and waterfall viewpoints
One or two pull-outs on the route — not every lay-by.
Molde harbour (return)
Soft landing if the road finishes with margin.
Varden viewpoint
Optional clear-weather coda after the road.
Before you sail
Booked coach, weather veto, locked return
- Pre-book coaches or drivers for Trollstigen; weather and seasonal closures can close the pass without notice. Write all-aboard on paper before you leave the terminal.
- Carry a wind layer and grip shoes for platforms and steps. Do not linger past the driver’s recall time — mountain returns compress fast when coaches bunch.
- If the road is closed or unbooked, use the molde town plan instead. Improvised hairpins after lunch are how guests meet late taxis and closed passes. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
