Campania
Bay capital under Vesuvius
Naples is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities — a Greek foundation that became a major Bourbon capital. The centro storico still runs dense and loud under Vesuvius’s silhouette. Churches, palazzi and pizza streets pack into a tight grid below the cone across the bay. The volcano is not decoration; it is the city’s permanent horizon.
Vesuvius and the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum sit to the south-east. Capri lies across the bay as the island escape. Both outings leave little room for a second headline. That is why a waterfront berth can feel like a transfer lounge if you never walk inland to Spaccanapoli. Guests who stay in the city still get a real Naples day. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
The practical choice on a Naples call is Pompeii or Capri, or a full city day among Spaccanapoli, the Duomo lanes and a museum — not a three-way split. The National Archaeological Museum holds the best portable finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, so guests who stay ashore can still touch the Vesuvian story without a site coach. Choose museum-plus-centro or one big outing.
Pompeii or Capri. Naples streets are the third plan when you stay ashore without a ticket.

Ashore
Ruins, island, or city fallback
- 01
Pompeii as the archaeology day
The excavated Roman town under Vesuvius needs site time, sun cover and a clear return. Do not add Capri. Ticket lines and heat on the excavated streets demand water, hats and a single-site focus. Herculaneum is the shorter alternative when hours are medium and you still want Vesuvian archaeology.
- 02
Capri as the island day
Ferry or hydrofoil across the bay for piazzas, cliff views and optional Anacapri. Queues at Marina Grande and island taxis erase casual plans. Make Capri the whole day or stay on the mainland. Check the last return against all-aboard before you buy tickets.
- 03
Centro storico and pizza streets
Spaccanapoli, the Duomo area and classic pizzerias are the correct fallback when you skip both big outings. A considered pizza stop and a slow street walk beat racing every church façade. Keep bags zipped in crowded lanes and leave time for the walk or taxi back to the berth.
- 04
National Archaeological Museum
Finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum sit in the city museum. This is a strong half-day if you stay in Naples rather than riding to the ruins. Use it when the Vesuvius view from the water already satisfied the volcano itch and you want depth without the site coach.
- 05
Lungomare stroll with Vesuvius in frame
The waterfront promenade gives the classic bay-and-volcano photograph without leaving the harbour district. Walk it early or late when heat eases. Treat it as orientation before Pompeii, or as the calm spine if you refuse the big outings. Flat walking and sea air are the point.
- 06
Castel dell’Ovo and Borgo Marinari
The islet fortress and harbour restaurants sit close to many cruise gates and offer sea air without a Capri ticket. Useful when coach queues look hostile. Keep lunch timed so a later centro walk still fits. Agree a taxi back if legs are tired.
- 07
Choose Pompeii or Capri — not both
Each outing owns a half day once queues, tickets and returns enter the clock. Stacking both is the classic Naples regret that ends in a taxi sprint. Pick the ruins, the island, or a city-and-museum day. Protect all-aboard and leave the second headline for another visit.

What's worth doing
Pompeii
Buried Roman city — either/or with Capri.
Capri
Bay island by ferry — either/or with Pompeii.
Centro storico
Dense historic streets a short hop from the berths.
Archaeological Museum
City museum holding Vesuvian finds — strong fallback.
Before you sail
Either/or, ferries and crowded streets
- Choose Pompeii or Capri, or stay in the city. Two big outings exceed a normal call. Confirm whether your berth sits beside Molo Beverello or needs a shuttle before counting hydrofoil minutes as free time.
- Capri ferries and Pompeii trains both queue on ship days — carry a return buffer larger than the brochure suggests. Keep bags zipped on crowded metro stairs and site queues. Leave spare cards on the ship when you ride inland.
- Summer heat on excavated stone is severe. Schedule shade breaks and never treat a Vesuvius crater add-on as a casual afterthought after a full Pompeii morning. The city fallback rewards walking with attention, not haste.
