Port guide · Skagway

Broadway boardwalk or the White Pass train

Skagway fills a narrow valley at the head of Taiya Inlet. Ships berth within walking distance of Broadway’s false-front street. Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route or stay on the boardwalk — combining both plus a long hike on a short call eats the clock. Broadway’s false-front boardwalk sits under the mountains that stampers once climbed; the White Pass & Yukon Route is the other half of a honest day, not a third museum after both.

Skagway

Into town · Walk from the cruise docks into Broadway and the historic district. Train depot sits near the harbour; coach or shuttle for Yukon border viewpoints and out-of-town trails. Taxis and shuttles stack on Broadway when several ships share the pier — agree a return before you wander the side streets.

Southeast Alaska

Gold-rush gateway to the Interior

Skagway grew overnight when stampeders climbed the White Pass and Chilkoot trails toward the Klondike. The false-front street and railway still mark that corridor from tidewater to the Yukon. The White Pass & Yukon Route railway, finished in 1900, still climbs the same corridor the stampeders used, turning a gold-rush supply line into the scenic spine of a modern cruise call under the mountains behind the harbour.

The White Pass & Yukon Route, built at the turn of the twentieth century, remains a working heritage line into the mountains. Cruise days concentrate on Broadway shops and the train. Broadway’s boardwalk and false fronts preserve the boomtown face visitors expect, yet the side streets and depot yards still read as a working Alaska town rather than a theme set — walk them with the ship clock in mind.

The town is compact and walkable from the docks. Distance arrives only when you leave for the pass, lakes or border viewpoints — choose one outward plan and keep a return buffer. Shore days succeed when guests pick the railway climb or a focused Broadway-and-trail morning, and fail when they add both plus a distant glacier coach without margin for the pier queue.

Broadway on foot, or the White Pass train. Not both plus a long trail.

Ashore

Boardwalk, train, or one trail

  1. 01

    Walk Broadway’s false fronts

Boardwalk, harbour edge and historic blocks a short stroll from typical berths. The easy Skagway hour without a ticket. Read the shop fronts and side alleys on foot rather than from a rolling coach; the boardwalk under the mountains is the town’s postcard and its easiest hour from the pier.

  2. 02

Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route

Mountain railway toward the pass and Yukon border country. Bookable half-day — treat as the main outing, not a bolt-on after a long hike. Book the train as the day’s centrepiece when weather and hours allow — the pass climb is why Skagway sits on itineraries, not another gift-shop lap.

  3. 03

Take a short trail near town

Lower valley walks and viewpoints when you skip the train. Stay close if all-aboard is tight. Short trails near town reward sturdy shoes and an early start; turn back with time for Broadway before the pier congests.

  4. 04

Add one short shuttle stop only

Jewell Gardens or a single out-of-town pull-off if hours remain after Broadway. Do not add a full Yukon road day on a normal call. One shuttle overlook is enough; combining three photo stops with the railway usually costs the buffer you need at the gangway.

  5. 05

Jewell Gardens or a short valley stop

A brief garden or valley pull-off works when the railway is not your plan and Broadway is already done. Keep it to one stop with a pre-agreed taxi return. Treat it as colour, not a second major outing after the pass.

  6. 06

Skagway museum hour if rain owns the street

The town museum and related gold-rush displays give indoor depth when boardwalk weather turns mean. Use them between Broadway blocks rather than as an excuse to add a full indoor circuit. Photograph all-aboard before you settle into cases.

  7. 07

White Pass by rail — leave Chilkoot for hikers

The Chilkoot Trail belongs to hikers with real hours and kit, not a cruise afternoon after Broadway shopping. White Pass by rail is the practical gold-rush story from this pier. Keep the town boardwalk as your buffer. Protect all-aboard.

What's worth doing

Arctic Brotherhood Hall

Driftwood façade on Broadway — quick photo stop in the historic strip.

Moore Homestead

Early settler buildings south of the main boardwalk for a quieter corner.

Railroad depot precinct

Working rail face of town where White Pass trains still board.

Yakutania Point trailhead

Short coastal path west of town when legs want air without a coach.

Before you sail

Dock walk, train timing, weather

  • Broadway is walkable from the cruise docks; the railway needs a booked departure and firm return. Confirm which pier and shuttle pattern your ship uses; Broadway is close but still a timed walk when crowds peak.
  • Weather in the pass can differ sharply from town — layers matter on open train cars. Weather on the pass changes fast — layers and a rain shell matter more than another souvenir stop.
  • Town plus train is enough. A long trail on top often overruns a standard Alaska call. Pre-book the railway on multi-ship days; standby hopes vanish when coaches fill.
