Freestyle dining on a walkable Jewel

Norwegian Jade is classic NCL Freestyle on a Jewel-class ship from 2006, with a substantial refresh in 2022. You eat when you want. You dress as you like for dinner. She is small enough that most guests know the shortcuts by day two. She is not a Prima-class ship — there is no go-kart track and no long megaship walk between venues — and that suits UK bookers who want Freestyle without Oasis-scale crowds.

Dining is the main reason many guests choose her. More than fourteen restaurants sit on board. Three main dining rooms and the Garden Café buffet are included. Specialty rooms such as Cagney’s, La Cucina and Le Bistro carry a cover charge. O’Sheehan’s runs as the 24-hour pub. On deck you get two pools, four hot tubs and a kids’ splash pool, with Topsiders and The Great Outdoors covering casual pool-deck meals.

Evenings centre on Stardust Theatre for production shows, then Bliss Ultra Lounge and a compact bar circuit after dark. Daytime is the pools, adults-only Vibe Beach Club on Deck 14 for an extra charge, and the enlarged Mandara thermal suite. Splash Academy and Entourage look after children and teens. The Haven keeps its own courtyard, pool and restaurant for suite guests. Starbucks is the high-street coffee option — the same drinks as ashore, and not included in the cruise.

If you want Freestyle dining, a proper theatre and a ship you can still learn in a sea day, Jade is a sensible mid-size choice.

Restaurants, shows, the rest

  1. 01

    Eat when you want

There is no assigned table and no second sitting. That is Freestyle dining in practice. Three main dining rooms and the Garden Café buffet take you as you arrive. Specialty rooms such as Cagney’s, La Cucina and Le Bistro carry a cover; Moderno and Teppanyaki suit guests who want a louder evening. Book a specialty table on embarkation day — sea-day slots go first. O’Sheehan’s is the 24-hour pub. Topsiders covers the pool-deck burger hours. Freestyle does not mean an empty specialty table at half past seven.

  2. 02

    Stardust Theatre

Stardust on Decks 6–7 is the centre of Jade’s evenings. NCL production shows fill the big nights — recent seasons have included Elements and Blazing Boots — with comics, magicians and guest acts between them. This is cruise-stage spectacle, not a West End transfer. Jade is not a licensed Broadway musical ship. When NCL puts a title musical on a sister Freestyle ship, that programme changes by season, so treat any named show as current-season colour. Book a centre seat on night one if the headline production matters to you.

  3. 03

    After dark

Bliss Ultra Lounge is the late room for dancing and louder sets after the theatre. Magnum’s, Mixers, Tankards, Sugarcane, the Sake Bar and a cigar lounge sit on the same few decks, so a bar crawl stays a short walk. Spinnaker Lounge on Deck 13 handles the bigger live bands, trivia and sea-day quizzes. The casino and Galleria shops sit midship for the after-dinner wander. Drink packages and specialty cocktails sit outside the cruise — decide what you will actually order before you buy a package.

  4. 04

    Pools, Vibe and the spa

Two pools, four hot tubs and a kids’ splash pool take most of the outdoor day. Deck 14 is Vibe Beach Club — adults only, extra charge, with cabanas and its own bar — for guests who want a quieter sundeck away from the splash zone. Mandara Spa & Salon on Deck 12 has the enlarged thermal suite, sold as a day pass or package. Body Waves gym is next door. The jogging track and sports court sit on Deck 13. There is no ropes course or go-kart track here — those live on newer NCL classes — so the outdoor plan is pools, Vibe and a spa you might actually use.

  5. 05

    Kids, casino, coffee

Splash Academy looks after younger children and Entourage takes the teens, both on Deck 12. Hours shift between sea days and port days. The casino and Galleria shops are the midship evening loop once the clubs close. Starbucks is the high-street coffee option — the same drinks as the pier, and not included. Up top, The Haven keeps its own courtyard, pool and restaurant for suite guests — a quieter private area, not a second ship. Families who will use the clubs and the splash pool get the most from Jade.

Cagney’s Steakhouse

Deck 13 — NCL’s classic specialty steak room and one of the pricier covers on board. Quieter and more dressed-up than the Garden Café or the main dining rooms. Go here when you want a splurge dinner, not a cheap filler night. Book early on sea days.

La Cucina

Deck 12 Italian with a cover charge — pasta and trattoria plates as a paid night out rather than the included main rooms. Mid-spend specialty: less than the steakhouse, more of an occasion than the buffet. Book early on sea days if Italian is your treat.

Le Bistro

Deck 6 French specialty — a quieter, more formal cover than the casual decks. Expect a higher spend than the main dining rooms or Garden Café. Best when you want a dressed-up evening without joining the steakhouse queue.

Moderno Churrascaria

Deck 13 Brazilian rodizio grill — servers carve to the table until you flip the disc. A cover charge applies. It is a louder, longer night than Le Bistro. Ideal if you want spectacle with the meat, not a quick plated dinner.

Teppanyaki / Jasmine Garden

Deck 7 Asian room and the grill tables — teppanyaki theatre plus quieter Jasmine Garden plates, both with a cover. More of an occasion than the main dining rooms. Book early on sea days if knife-and-flame tables are your kind of evening.

Garden Café & main rooms

Garden Café buffet plus Alizar and Grand Pacific — the included Freestyle core. Proper plated meals or self-serve without a cover charge. Best for guests who want classic cruise dinners and low-fuss breakfasts without budgeting extras every night.

Stardust Theatre

Decks 6–7 house showroom for NCL production nights — recent seasons have included Elements and Blazing Boots — plus comics, magicians and guest acts between them. Cruise-stage spectacle, not a West End transfer. Titles change by season, so check your sailing. Included with the cruise. Grab a centre seat on night one if the headline matters.

Bliss Ultra Lounge

Deck 7 late room for dancing and louder sets after Stardust lets out. Drinks sit outside the simple cruise — decide what you will actually order. Best when you want the night to keep going without walking up to Spinnaker.

Vibe Beach Club

Deck 14 adults-only sundeck with cabanas and its own bar — sold as an extra day pass or package, not included in the cruise. Quieter than the main pool and splash zone if you paid for that key. Book ahead on sea days if heat and quiet are the plan.

Mandara Spa

Deck 12 spa with the enlarged thermal suite sold as a day pass or package — not included in the simple cruise. A calmer daytime reset than the pool deck or Vibe. Book ahead on sea days if heat loungers and steam are your reset.

Fit

Who she is for

  • UK bookers who want NCL’s no-dress-code, no-fixed-sitting Freestyle style without Prima- or Breakaway-scale crowds — mid-size Jewel bones, a dining list that still feels generous, and a deck plan you can learn without an app.
  • Families and multi-gen groups that will actually use Splash Academy, Entourage and the pool deck, and are happy to budget for one or two specialty nights — Cagney’s or Moderno among them — plus drinks rather than expect every restaurant to be included.
  • Not the ship if you want quiet traditional dining with a British crew culture, a ropes course or go-kart track, or a brand-new megaship. Choose a Prima-class ship or a classic British line instead.

Where

Where Jade tends to go

NCL currently programmes her on a mix of Alaska, Asia and longer repositioning runs. Mediterranean seasons have been part of the habit too. Bases and routes shift year to year.

Treat this as the ship’s range, not a fixed timetable. When this guide is public, sailings with two or more UK agent prices will sit at the bottom.

Before you book

What the brochure skips

  • Freestyle does not mean everything is included. Specialty dining, Vibe, the thermal suite, Starbucks and most drink packages are extras. Price the holiday as the cruise plus what you will actually buy.
  • Compare UK agents on the same sailing — same ship, same date, cruise-only, two guests. The hero price should be the lowest bookable one, not the first logo you recognise.
