Northern Ireland
Shipyard city that rebuilt itself
Belfast grew on linen wealth, then on Harland and Wolff's yards, where Olympic-class liners including Titanic were designed and launched into the Lagan. The Titanic Quarter occupies that former industrial waterfront, so cruise guests still arrive inside the shipbuilding story rather than in a reinvented marina beside an unrelated town centre. That matters when you plan the day — the yard is the doorstep.
Late-twentieth-century conflict reshaped streets, security patterns and the civic core. Peace-process decades brought museums, riverside paths, denser café streets around City Hall and a deliberate reuse of the old yard land for visitors. The rebuilt centre rewards a separate inland hour once the harbour galleries are done. It is a different mood from the slipway plaza.
Cruise calls drop you in the yard first. Treat Titanic Belfast and the outdoor slipway markers as the harbour stop, then decide whether hours remain for Donegall Square or a Causeway Coast run. Trying to collect museum, city-hall lunch and basalt columns in one ordinary call is how return buffers disappear at the gate. Pick yard-and-centre, or yard-and-coast — not the full set.
The yard story starts near the gangway. Keep the Causeway for another itinerary.

Yard, centre, or coast
- 01
Titanic Belfast and the slipways
The museum and outdoor yard markers sit closest to the berths. Give the galleries a proper multi-hour slot if the ship story is your priority — rushing the interactive floors wastes the visit. Pair outdoor slipway photos with the museum rather than treating them as a separate distant outing across town.
- 02
SS Nomadic and harbour walk
The restored White Star tender and the Lagan waterfront path stretch a Titanic Quarter morning without leaving the harbour side. Useful when you want yard texture after the museum, or when centre traffic looks messy. Flat paving suits mixed mobility better than inland cobbles.
- 03
City Hall and Donegall Square
The civic landmark and shopping streets around the square need a bus or taxi from the harbour. Once you arrive the grid is compact: cathedral quarter, Victoria Square and café streets sit within a walkable core. Budget transfer time both ways, not only the inbound hop.
- 04
Cathedral Quarter lanes
Murals, pubs and smaller streets north of the centre give a denser streetscape than the Titanic plaza. Best as an add-on after City Hall rather than a standalone dash from the ship. Keep an eye on evening timing if your call runs late into dinner hours.
- 05
Botanic Gardens if hours remain
Palm House, Tropical Ravine and the university fringe sit south of the centre by bus or taxi. A pleasant green pause after museums, but not worth burning Causeway time. Skip if you still need to reverse to the Titanic Quarter gate with a buffer.
- 06
Giant's Causeway on a long day only
Coast road, visitor centre and basalt columns swallow most of a call once coaching and site walking are counted. Do not stack a full Titanic museum morning with the Causeway unless hours are unusually generous and the return coach is guaranteed.
- 07
Stay yard-side on a short call
If alongside time is tight, Titanic Belfast plus Nomadic and a harbour coffee beat a stressed dash to City Hall and back. The centre will still be there on a longer Northern Ireland itinerary when the clock is kinder.

Before you sail
Harbour yard, then a choice
- Berths sit in Belfast Harbour's Titanic Quarter. The museum area is the nearest serious outing and often walkable or a short shuttle from the gangway depending on exact quay assignment.
- City centre sights need a short transfer inland — budget time both ways through traffic, especially if you are aiming for a fixed museum entry slot back at the yard later.
- The Causeway Coast is a separate plan with coach queues and site walking. Confirm return buffers and all-aboard before committing; weather on the north coast can slow outdoor time sharply.
