Shetland
Norse islands under a Scottish flag
Lerwick is Shetland’s capital harbour, a stone town facing Bressay across a sheltered sound. Norse heritage sits under later Scottish rule and a strong island identity that still feels distinct from mainland Scotland. Commercial Street and the Lodberries show a working harbour grain. Guests land in a real northern town, not a theme pier. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Clickimin Broch on the town edge and Fort Charlotte above the harbour give close history without a long drive. Scalloway, the old capital to the west, adds castle ruins and a different harbour scale. Jarlshof and Sumburgh Head at the south tip are the big archaeology and seabird commitment. Weather and distance both argue for choosing town depth or one south road, not both rushed.
Cruise logistics start at Holmsgarth for many ships. The honest day is Commercial Street, fort and broch — or Scalloway — or a locked south Mainland coach to Jarlshof. Guests who try every site remember wind on the windshield more than the broch stones. Pick a radius that matches the call length. Keep an eye on all-aboard before you invent a second outing.
Town lanes for a short call. Jarlshof only when the south road fits the clock.

Ashore
Town, Scalloway or south Mainland
- 01
Commercial Street and Fort Charlotte
Walk the flagged lanes and climb to Fort Charlotte for harbour views. This is the default Lerwick hour from the shuttle drop. Pair with Clickimin rather than racing south at once. Stone streets and a fort circuit fill a short call well.
- 02
Clickimin Broch
The broch beside the town loch is a rare prehistoric tower within easy reach. Allow time to walk the site properly. Combine with Commercial Street for a complete town morning. You do not need a coach for this.
- 03
Scalloway
The old capital west of Lerwick offers castle ruins and a quieter harbour. Go by taxi or bus with a clear return. Treat Scalloway as either/or with Jarlshof on a medium call. One west harbour done calmly beats a half-seen south tip.
- 04
Jarlshof and Sumburgh on a long call
The multi-period settlement and Sumburgh Head need a south Mainland road day. Book a coach or taxi with locked recall. Skip town museums if you choose the south. Stacking Clickimin and Jarlshof with shopping is how people run late.
- 05
Visit Shetland Museum if rain owns the morning
The museum near the waterfront is excellent weather cover and genuine context. Use it when horizontal rain cancels photo walks. Keep the visit focused. Indoor depth beats forcing Jarlshof in a gale you will not enjoy.
- 06
Walk the Lodberries harbour edge
The seafront houses built to the water make a short, distinctive circuit. Pair with Commercial Street. Watch your footing in wet weather. This is local texture, not a substitute for deciding whether the south road is on or off.
- 07
Skip Mainland wild-goose drives on short calls
Random croft roads and distant beaches look tempting and destroy buffers. Stay with town, Scalloway or one booked south coach. Shetland distances punish improvisation. A clear plan is kindness to your future self at Holmsgarth.

Before you sail
Holmsgarth shuttle and south distance
- Many ships use Holmsgarth north of the centre. Budget shuttle or taxi into town before you invent a long walk with luggage-day legs. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Jarlshof and Sumburgh need a south Mainland commitment. Treat them as either/or with a deep town morning, not a casual add-on. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
- Wind and rain are normal. Museum hours and covered lanes matter as much as photo viewpoints when the weather turns. Write all-aboard down before you leave the terminal.
